The Dixon, Tower Bridge

Studio Moren designed and achieved planning for the 193-room Dixon Hotel. This Marriott Autograph hotel by Dominvs Group is housed in the converted, and substantially extended, Grade II listed 1906 John Dixon Butler Tower Bridge Police Station and Magistrates Court in London.

Our brief was to create a hotel which combines a respect for the rich history of the building, with the contemporary character and culture of the vibrant neighbourhood in which it is located.

To the listed building we added two discreet new mansard roofs above the east and west bays of the main façade, based on an interpretation of other Dixon Butler buildings of this age, importance and genre. The distinctive courtroom number one was converted into a bar. We retained much of its internal timberwork and other original features, including a reinstated grand clerestory roof light.

The cell blocks to the rear were redeveloped with a contemporary extension inspired by the composition and materiality of Dixon Butler’s architecture. Some of the original holding cells were restored and reintegrated inside the new restaurant and delicatessen.

Accessed via a separate entrance to Queen Elizabeth Street the hotel’s food and beverage offer adds local amenity and creates an active street level frontage.
