When industrial heritage blends with York's greenery and the East
Our brief for SORA was to create a destination rooftop venue within Malmaison York.
Located on the seventh floor, the space has wrap-around views over the city and its surroundings, which became the main focus of the scheme.
Conceptually, the space has a separate identity to the hotel and focuses on the industrial heritage and extensive green spaces of York. Flexibility to host varying group and event sizes was also a key part of the client’s brief.
Our main challenge was to maximise the extensive views over the city
Seating is oriented to capitalise on the panorama and the bar is purposely set low within the space to frame and provide uninterrupted views. We worked closely with the lighting designer to ensure that reflections on glazing were minimised at night protecting views of York Minster.
On arrival via the dedicated express lift, guests are greeted by a feature adaptable glass screen which creates a bespoke view and artwork each day. Nature inspired upholsteries and soft furnishings contrast against Crittall dividing screens which allow the large open plan space to be broken down into more intimate areas for functions. A bold striped ceiling sits within the centre of the space directing guests gaze out towards the Minster.
