InterContinental Lusaka
The InterContinental Lusaka re- opened its doors in September 2022 and concluded the second phase of the hotel's refurbishment. Studio Moren was approached in 2016 to restructure the existing Intercontinental Hotel.
Originally designed by architect William B. Tabler under the lead of industry pioneer Neal Prince, IHG's lead designer at the time, the hotel was built in 1968 and has been a landmark in the Zambian capital for the last 50 years.
The first phase of the refurbishment involved creating a new, separate Holiday Inn hotel which opened in 2020 to cater for the mid-market. During the second phase of the works, Studio Moren redesigned the InterContinental in line with the most recent brand guidelines and introduced an interior design concept based on a palette inspired by minerals such as copper, in which Zambia is rich, and adding a modern, urban African flavour. The result is 106 exclusive guestrooms, 87 of which are now suites.
One of the main challenges of the brief was to separate the conferencing facilities from the hotel lobby. Our response created a direct route between the conference rooms and the dining facilities. In the restaurant, we created a flexible space capable of catering for 700 guests during events and offering private dining at other times. Finally, the new rooftop club lounge, with a bar, meeting rooms, restaurant, and outdoor terrace, offers views across the Zambian capital and is a truly unique experience in Lusaka.
